The famous baroque sculptor, Gianlorenzo Bernini’s, Fountain of the Four Rivers stands in the middle of the piazza, which is surrounded by restaurants, shops, and churches. During the day artists sell their views of Rome and street artists perform for passersby. The Piazza Navona is a delightful spot to rest your feet and eat a gelato, sip a cappuccino, or dine and enjoy the view at any of the surrounding restaurants with a glass of prosecco.

The Piazza Navona is built on the remains of the stadium built by Domitian 80 AD. It was primarily used for foot races and other athletic games, which were called the agones . Unlike a circus the stadium is flat on one end. It was a popular destination for Romans to enjoy sporting events. After your transfer in Rome, you too could stretch your legs and run a lap around the piazza!

In the Middle Ages, Piazza Navona was Rome’s central market place; the palaces, shops, and churches faced outward on to the streets surrounding the stadium. The piazza and the quarter were prime real estate in Rome, no matter if you were Roman or new to the city. Located between the sacred and secular centers of Renaissance Rome, the Vatican and the Capitoline Hill, the Piazza Navona was the perfect spot for people who had to transfer between these two centers for work. Fortunately, you have Rome Transfer’s drivers to allow you to make all your transfers in the city easy and stress free. Non-Roman families, who transferred to the city, liked to buy and build their family palaces here, to proclaim their Romaness and thus their legitimacy.

The Pampihij transfer to Rome

While you transferred in Rome with Rome Transfer, the Pamphilj transferred from Umbria to Piazza Navona in 1470. You may have heard of the Doria-Pamphilj family for their villa estate on the Janiculum or their family palace in the city. In the fifteenth and sixteenth century, however, they were known for their careers in the Church. The most eminent of the family members was Giambattista Pamphilj, who was elected pope in 1644 becoming Pope Innocent X. His family palace stands on the southwest side of the piazza, and today is the Brazilian Embassy. His sister-in-law, Olimpia Maidalchini, was a cultured and clever woman. She was responsible for expanding the family palace, funding Innocent X’s rise in the Church, and according to legend, even sneaking in Bernini’s model for the Fountain of the Four Rivers (the artist was in disgrace after his bell-tower supposedly cracked the façade of the newly-finished St. Peter’s Basilica).

The Fountain of the Four Rivers was commissioned for the special Jubilee year of 1650, when faithful pilgrims from all over the world, would transfer to the Eternal City to receive indulgences. By this time, the focus of the piazza faced inwards, the city market it had previously hosted was transferred to Campo dei Fiori, and Innocent X’s family palace and fountain were the new focus of the piazza and even Rome! The fountain features four lounging gods representing the rivers of the four corners of the world: the Danube, the Nile, the Ganges, and the Plata. They rest against a massive hollow rock, under which the waters of the world flow. It is populated by a host of sea creatures! Can you find the sea serpent? Over the rock is an Egyptian obelisk topped with a bronze dove bearing an olive branch: a symbol of peace and of the Pamphilj! If you are satisfied with Piazza Navona’s charming monuments, ask your driver from Rome Transfer to take you to another amazing place after you are done.
