From the ocean to an aqueduct, don’t miss the iconic Trevi Fountain. The fountain derives its name from the Italian for three roads – tre via or vie in the plural. The Trevi Fountain is the terminus of the ancient Roman aqueduct, the Acqua Vergine or Virgin Waters. According to legend, a virgin helped the Romans locate the water source in 19 BC, and the aqueduct derives its name from this roman virgin, Trivia. A more current legend says if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, you will return to Rome. The iconic sculpted façade of the Trevi Fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and begun in 1732. After Salvi’s death Giuseppe Pannini completed the fountain in 1762. Fendi recently restored the fountain and had over 100 LED lights installed so it can be appreciated both day and night. Fendi celebrated their 90th anniversary by having their models walk on a plexiglass runway on the fountain. Now everyone or anywhere in the world can enjoy the beauty of the newly restored fountain. Transferring water: the Aqueducts of Rome and the Acqua Vergine

The Acqua Vergine feeds the Trevi Fountain, and was the only aqueduct to survive the Barbarian invasions of Rome, such as the one in 537 AD, because it is under ground. As such the Acqua Vergine and the Tiber River, which was polluted, were Rome’s only water sources until Pope Sixtus V restored the Acqua Felice, which was finished in 1587.

The Acqua Vergine also transfers water to Gianlorenzo Berini’s fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona. You may notice that the water in both these fountains, unlike the Triton Fountain, flows down in cascades rather than shooting up like jets. This is due to Acqua Felice’s low pressure. In fact, you will notice that you have to walk down below the street to view the fountain, and that the fountains are actually at street level.

What do these sculptures mean?

The theme of the fountain is Taming the Waters. In the central niche Oceanus stands in seashell chariot pulled by tritons and hippocamps. In niches to the left and right of Oceanus stand Abundance and Salubrity, respectively. Above Abundance and Salubrity are reliefs showing the original discovery of the water source by Trivia. The fountain is built into the façade of Palazzo Polli. The niches create the impression of a triumphal like the Arch of Constantine or the Arc de Triumph in Rome. The scene creates an additional impression of grandeur by adding large Corinthian pilasters that span the two-story façade of the palazzo. Like many of Rome’s buildings and monuments, the fountain is primarily made of Travertine that was transferred from Tivoli to Rome.
